I WAS Going to Write a Blog Post…

by Heather on April 25, 2012 · 24 comments

But I failed to plan for what I’ve termed “unexpected events.” Such as a 2-year-old boy who decides to eat a tube of Desitin,

AND smear it all over the furniture and the carpet in his room.

He also squeezed it into his ear…it took several Q-tips to clean it all out.

At least he looks sufficiently remorseful. Either that, or Desitin tastes really awful.

So, now I must go drag the steam cleaner up from the basement. My life is just all excitement, all the time, guys!

my niece put an entire tube of Destin in her hair. I’ll give you a tip…use LOTS of Dawn dish soap! Good luck :)

Desitin is the WORST!!!! I tried everything to get it out but to no avail. Clothes went in the trash (after a few washings the stain that I couldn’t get out started to sink like rotten fish) and I am still finding it (about two years later) in the grain of our wood furniture. I hope you have more luck and if you do please share your secrets. After that incident I banned that white devil cream from the house. I got grossed out thinking about it molecularly bonding to my little guy’s bottom!

Oh my word! His face is priceless tho :)

You will laugh one day about it!!

Jennifer Peters-Ahnberg April 25, 2012 at 8:03 pm

Oh my…. wow. I’m without words and the fact that he isn’t up for sale on Craig’s List says a lot about you as a mother.

Emsweeney April 25, 2012 at 8:04 pm

Have just googles Desitin as we don’t have it in Ireland (think it is the same as sudocream) and laughed out loud then felt bad for you heather what a nightmare that stuff is to come off it really does its job as a barrier cream well! Good luck!

heatherlynnie April 25, 2012 at 8:27 pm

Yes…I am not pleased. I couldn’t help laughing, though. Really, sometimes that’s all you can do.

deborahbenedict April 25, 2012 at 8:25 pm

Oh no! That stuff is nasty to clean out of carpet! The pics are hilarious, though, not being in the situation!

I recently had my fourth child.  Since she was born, I have had excitement like that from my third child (a 2 yr old boy) routinely.  When we came home from the hospital he got into some newly prescribed vaginal cream before we could get unpacked.  Then we he got into some nystatin (prescription diaper cream) while I was changing the new baby.  He squeezed out an entire travel sized tube of toothpaste onto himself and our loveseat while I was bathing the girls.  One morning after a long night of being up with the baby, he got into a new bottle of gas drops and drank it entirely.  Besides these more serious acting out instances, he also routinely eats crayons, sand, and paper (or book bindings).  My two older ones never did this.  I have begun to believe it is just a boy thing.  Either way, it is driving me INSANE!!!  So believe me when I say…I am so sorry!

Oh, Heather, I’m sorry, but this is just soooo funny.  I’m sure that you see the humor, even though the “incident” meant so much more work for you.  I just can’t imagine that Desitin would taste good enough for him to keep eating it.

Butterflylady97 April 25, 2012 at 10:17 pm

My oldest had a habit of sticking things up her nose. Ugh…kids never a dull moment!

Jerucia Cameron April 25, 2012 at 10:51 pm

haha yep I remember that, we’ve had the diaper cream incident, the baby powder and the food coloring… on the carpet! Trust me the food coloring one was the worst.

Amy April 26, 2012 at 1:17 am

Oh no! My son did this a while back, I remember it was one of a few calls to poison control I made.  He also ate latex paint. (he pried the lid off of a paint can??)

DJ removes cabinet hardware without tools…how do they do this stuff?

Roxie April 26, 2012 at 2:21 am

You know if that boy of yours gets any cuter when he is naughty I don’t think you will stand a chance.  He is just a cutie.
Good luck getting the cream out of the carpet.
My youngest son once opened a can of spaghetti and changed his mind. Did he put it in the fridge?  No, not my son.  He put it into his underwear drawer.  I found it a week later when it was slimmy and green.

When my son was 3 we had an overnight guest who had black hair coloring in their bag and luckily my son didn’t ingest any, but he did dump it all over the carpet. There was nothing to do but cover it with an area rug.

heatherlynnie April 28, 2012 at 3:26 pm

Oh my goodness…I think I should just count my blessings, that it was only butt cream (or bockee, as DJ refers to it).

Renee April 26, 2012 at 10:54 am

Dawn dish soap; the blue stuff. All else fails, scrub with dawn! We use cloth diapers and it’s the best stuff for stripping any and all residue out, including diaper cream (I use old-fashioned flats so I don’t have to worry about what I use on them as much). It is a beast to get out though.

Our middle daughter went through a Desitin finger painting phase – yuck! I have pictures of handprints on the carpet – thankfully we found her before she got to the same artistic level as DJ!

My 4-year-old got in to a JAR of Vaseline when he was 2.  He smeared it all over his bed, furniture, and toys.  I’m still finding it in nooks and crannies of toys.  His firetruck will forever have it inside the passenger area of the cab! I can’t get to it and I’m not quite sure how he got it in there!

My youngest is 12 now, but does this ever bring back his toddler days in a hurry. I have 2 boys a year and a half apart.  They were great babies, but when they finally got mobile, watch out!  And they went through it so close together.  For years it seemed I lived in a state of expectancy over what they would do next.  (Still do in a way, come to think of it!)  It all came back to me in a flash as I read and laughed over your blog entry….

AnikaGK April 26, 2012 at 10:13 pm

Oh my! He looks so cute and so sorry. My daughter and her cousin, both 3 years old, got into the potted plant today – dirt was everywhere. They just can’t resist, these little imps!

heatherlynnie April 28, 2012 at 3:25 pm

Another reason why I don’t have plants!

Norma Hess April 27, 2012 at 2:19 am

My 7 year old always managed to get into things as a toddler… Now with baby #3 on the way, this post brought back so many memories hehe… I hope it turned out ok! :D He looks so cute and I’m sure he won’t be eating any more Desitin any time soon, I can’t imagine that it tasted any good : lol

Janel :) April 29, 2012 at 11:40 am

Heather, I laughed so hard…but I truly feel sorry for you with the clean up. DJ’s little face is so precious…I could eat him up!!! In about 15 years from now, you will have so much fun telling him everything he did as a toddler! I’m sure you’ll get through this and continue to wait for the next disaster :)

Did you try baking soda? A family member of mine showed me that once you wipe it up off of the carpet that pouring baking soda on it will help absorb the oils in it. After an hour or two use a hand vacuum to suck as much up as you can without rubbing it in. Then clean with dawn or whatever mild liquid detergent you like.
