Around the Yard-Part 1

The weather is absolutely beautiful here today. Sunny and breezy, with temperatures in the mid 70s. Best of all—no rain. I was actually able to get outside and do some much needed weeding and trimming. While I was out, I snapped some pictures to give you, my blog friends, a little tour!

This is our driveway. In 2006, we tore out the huge, ugly, overgrown arbor vidaes that had completely taken over the east side of our lawn, and put down a lot of grass seed, which has filled in beautifully. My husband put in this fence, and I planted yuccas, mums, and miscellaneous bulbs along the driveway side. I didn’t have to buy anything–I just divided and transplanted plants that were already here:

Only two of our yuccas have flowered, because our harsh winter damaged the rest of them. They should all have these tall stalks, which bloom into dozens of pretty white flowers:

On the opposite side of the fence, we planted this staggered row of alternating blue and green dwarf spruce trees. Eventually, they will grow tall enough to provide a nice privacy hedge:

This is the north side of our yard:

This mulberry tree was just a sapling, which had started independently in the huge mass of arbor vidaes. We were careful to not disturb it when we tore them out, and it has flourished. It has berries this year, for the first time:

When we bought our house, there were three hosta plants along the front porch. I divided them and planted them all along the east side of the house. They are now HUGE!

Here’s our front porch. When we bought the house, the porch had no railing, and there was only a scraggly, overgrown rose bush, and the aforementioned hostas. We put in the flower bed, and I pruned the rose bush back. I’m trying to encourage it to climb the trellis, to hide the extremely ugly electrical box. We installed the porch railing, and powerwashed the stone front, to make the front porch more welcoming:

I wish I could invite all of you over. We could have some iced tea and cookies, and enjoy this gorgeous day together!

I loved the tour. Your yard is very cheery. Finally having sunshine must help!

I would love to come over for that iced tea!! Thanks for the tour of your yard – it is great – so lovely & green & neat!!! I think the hostas look great – I hadn’t heard of them before, but I shall have to go searching to see if they would work in this part of the world!! And as for mulberries YUM!! We had a tree in our yard when we were kids & it was so much fun to eat them straight off the tree (never mind the messiness!)

Your garden is lovely and lush, Heather. All that rain has really made everything green!

Nice to think maybe we really could have a cup of tea someday. ;)
